The Geelong Gaels GAA club was founded in 1952 by Irish employees from the Shell refinery, initially fielding teams in Gaelic Football and Hurling, with their first major victory coming in 1954 when they won the Victorian Hurling Championship. After several periods of folding and reforming, the club was re-established in 2013 by John Reaney and Nigel Maxey, with a focus on promoting Gaelic games in the Greater Geelong area, culminating in their 2017 victory at the Australasian Regional Games.
